Workshop — Paolo Cremonesi and Letizia Satto

cremonesi-workshop

The aqueous environment and solvents for treatments on works of art on paper application to documents, ancien art and contemporary art by Paolo Cremonesi, Conservation Chemist and Letizia Satto, Conservator.

The ENSAV La Cambre invites Paolo Cremonesi, Conservation Chemist, and Letizia Satto, Paper Conservator, for a four-day intensive workshop addressing conservator-restorers and conservation scientists.
The purpose of this workshop is to acquaint participants with the formulation of aqueous and solvent mixtures for the treatment of artworks on paper.

Number of participants :
• Day 1 & 2 (lectures): maximum 120 participants - Open to all conservation professionals, all fields of specialization
• Day 3 & 4 (practical applications): maximum 20 participants – Priority is given to paper conservators

Location :
ENSAV La Cambre (Artwork conservation-restoration Studio), 427 avenue Louise, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.

Language : English

Registration fee (coffee, tea & lunch included) :
• 2 days Lectures (day 1 & 2): € 95 (student outside La Cambre : € 30)
• 4 days Lectures + Practical applications: € 650, including all materials & lunch

Target group : conservator-restorers and conservation scientists
Application requirements: basic notions of chemistry are recommended.
Priority will be given to Paper Conservators for the four-day workshop

Program :
First Day (4th November)
9:00 – 13:00 and 14:00-18:00, Lecture, Cremonesi
Properties and mode of action of water. The aqueous environment: pH, acids and bases, buffers. Ionization, dissociation and hydrolysis. Salts and solubility. Ion concentration, conductivity and related processes: ion diffusion and osmosis. Hypo-, iso- and hyper-tonicity of aqueous solutions. Auxiliary ‘active principles’: surfactants and chelators, classification and mode of action. Gelling materials: polysaccharide-based and polyacrylic acid derivatives. Thermo-reversible gelling materials. Classification and mode of action of hydrolytic enzymes.
Classification and properties of organic solvents. Volatility, diffusion and solving power. The issue of toxicity. The solubility parameters. A gradual approach to solubility of film-formers: the solubility test. Siloxanes in free and gelled form. Temporary hydrophobization of water-sensitive surfaces

Second Day (5th November)
9:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 18:00. Practical Session, Cremonesi.
Preparation of aqueous solution and solvent mixtures in free and gelled form. Measuring surface parameters (pH and conductivity).

Third Day (6th November)
9:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 18:00. Practical Session, Satto
Aqueous and solvent treatments on selected case studies.

Fourth Day (7th November)
9:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 18:00. Practical Session, Satto
Aqueous and solvent treatments on selected case studies.
